So, it turns out I wasn’t resetting the PMU properly. I was using ye olde ‘reset button’ method. And, of course, the PowerBook G4 12″ doesn’t have a reset button. So, to clarify: holding the power button down for 45 seconds does not reset the Power Management Unit. Shutting the machine down, pressing Ctrl-Shift-Option-Power, releasing the keys and waiting five seconds before turning the machine back on does. My newly-reset PMU has brought back the sleep indicator light. But, that is all. So, I fear I must take my wonderful little machine in on Monday to get the Bluetooth module and Keyboard replaced. Hopefully I can take it in in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon to get the problems confirmed, and then do the same once the parts arrive. Because going without my PowerBook would be very frustrating.

Last year, the ‘?’ key fell off my PowerBook. I need to get it replaced. However, I have coped and continued on quite happily in the meantime. Three days ago, my Bluetooth adapter stopped working. Not the end of the world, since my PowerBook is the only Bluetooth device I have, but incredibly frustrating from the I-paid-for-the-damn-thing-and-now-it’s-broken point-of-view. I tried the usual things to see if it would come back: restart, resetting the PRAM, and resetting the Power Manager. None of them worked. In the course of trying to get my Bluetooth back, I noticed the sleep indicator is no longer turning on. This is very annoying, since I now have no idea as to whether the PowerBook is sleeping or has run out of battery life and died on me. In a last-ditch, hail mary play, I backed up my data, wiped my hard disk and reinstalled. This did not help. However, it has temporarily left me with almost all of my core suite of applications and over 33 gigabytes of free space on my machine. Which is nice. Plus, the system feels snappier. Nonetheless, I shall have to take my wonderful little PowerBook in for repairs this week. It has to be now, because I get to exploit the last convergence of my one year warranty and a break in classes. I am not looking forward to parting with my PowerBook for a few days.
